Muay Thai: A Training Vacation in Phuket

Packed onto a small street in the middle of Phuket, there is a Muay Thai neighbourhood that attracts kickboxers from all over the world. The “soi” (Thai for “street”) is a Muay Thai paradise because it offers everything a fighter or trainee could ask for: healthy restaurants, world-class training facilities, high-quality training equipment shops and beautiful beaches nearby. For a month, I found myself living and training on this soi, fully immersed in the Muay Thai community. It was there that I learned just how much grueling hard work and dedication goes into Muay Thai training.

I was inspired by kickboxing during my many vacations to Thailand over the last 10 years. Muay Thai is the national sport of Thailand and . A few years ago, I went to see some of the best Muay Thai fighters compete in Bangkok at the prestigious Lumpini Stadium – the pinnacle of Muay Thai culture. It was amazing to see competition at the highest level and to watch the traditions of the sport unfold in front of me. Fighters respected one another and pushed each other to the limit, something I greatly admire. While I’ve always wanted to try Muay Thai myself, there was never enough time during my vacations to commit to a training camp.

A few months ago, I decided to turn the idea of Muay Thai training into reality. I did my research and knew I wanted to train in Phuket, so I booked a flight there for late-January. To prepare for my training in Thailand, I joined a mixed martial arts (MMA) gym near Kyungsung University and started learning the closest thing to Muay Thai – kickboxing. From the very first day, I felt the immense gratification of learning and training. It was a near-addiction and I went to kickboxing classes 4-5 days a week after I finished work. Slowly, I felt my body adapting to the rigors of training: muscle soreness gradually disappeared and I felt stronger and quicker. There is a wonderful sense of accomplishment when this happens, to see oneself improving.

Those two months of kickboxing training laid the groundwork for my entry into Muay Thai in Thailand. Despite the months of online research I did beforehand, I hadn’t yet committed to a specific Muay Thai gym, or even booked a room in a hotel. I decided I would just go to Phuket and figure it out when I got there. Travelling alone, I admit it was initially quite intimidating and even thought to myself “What am I doing?”. But as I’ve seen happen many times in life, things have a way of sorting themselves out and we often find ourselves exactly where we are supposed to be.

The risk of waiting to discover things in person paid off and my choices of where to stay and train worked out better than I could have imagined. I arrived on the Muay Thai soi from the airport early in the morning and began looking for a guesthouse. Most of the hotels were either full or out of my price range but after talking to one of the receptionists, she recommended a quaint little guesthouse tucked into a side street. As I approached the guesthouse, I was greeted by smiling Thai woman named Fern, who owned the rooms with her family. We talked as she showed me the room and I immediately had a good feeling about the place. It was perfect.

Next came deciding on where to train, as there were several options, all with good and bad reviews I had read online. That afternoon, I went to one of the Muay Thai gyms I passed on the soi earlier and signed up for a class. The training was rigorous and I learned some new techniques, but something felt off and I wasn’t quite comfortable. I decided to try another gym nearby the following morning. The same feeling crept in after training and again, I wasn’t satisfied. There’s a proverb that says “the third time’s a charm” and it came true for me, as the final gym I went to ended up being just what I was looking for.

Training there was the most intense out of the three gyms but I loved it. Our group class began with 20 minutes of skipping, followed by a warm-up and stretching for 15 minutes. Next, there were four rounds of four-minute punching bag work, where we would practice striking on a bag. Then, we would be paired with a trainer who would hold pads and call out strikes for us to perform for another four rounds. Finally, and depending on the day, we would either have sparring for four rounds, where we would practice our Muay Thai technique with an opponent, or clinching for four rounds, where we would hold the back of the neck of the opponent and practice wrestling and striking with knees.

It was there that I met ‘Big’, a Muay Thai trainer who, ironically, is about 165cm tall. Despite the height difference, Big was very knowledgeable, spoke excellent English and had an easy-going teaching style. He noticed me during my first group training session and pulled me aside to coach me. That day he taught me how to strike with my knee. He would knee my side, and then I would knee his side, mimicking his style. At the end of the class, my sides were bruised and sore while his sides looked untouched. We had a good laugh about it and so our friendship began. I would later meet with Big everyday for a one-on-one training session and using his kindness and knowledge, he helped me hone my Muay Thai skills.

Classes were two-hours long and I attended two classes a day. Needless to say, four hours of training was exhausting. Luckily, the pool and comfortable bed at my guesthouse, along with nutritious meals I had at restaurants on the soi, helped a lot with my recovery. My diet consisted of mainly chicken and vegetables but I also added in a number of delicious Thai dishes, such as Tom Kha (coconut soup), Pad Thai (fried noodles) and Khao Pad (fried rice). Since there was so much fresh fruit available, I would snack on pineapple or enjoy a mango shake in between meals. The funny thing about the soi is that it’s dead quiet after 9 p.m. Why? Because everyone goes to bed early to be ready for training the next morning!

What was most interesting during my vacation was to see firsthand how learning continues to be so rewarding in life. I learned much about myself from my experiences in Phuket: my strengths and weaknesses, the joys of accomplishment and the pain of failure. As an educator myself, I believe it is important to keep learning from other teachers. Since becoming a student of Muay Thai, I’ve been reminded what's it like to be new to something and what it takes to learn effectively – to be patient, empathetic, and humble. And so with this insight and perspective, I start a new semester of teaching my students at Kyungsung Unviersity, feeling refreshed and more enthusiastic than ever.
