Road Tripping Across Eastern Canada

As the summer holidays slowly come to an end, I can’t help but reflect on the amazing past two months I spent in Canada. Of all my great memories, the highlight of my vacation was an epic 2-week road trip throughout Eastern Canada. Joining me was my longtime friend , Kristi, and together we travelled through the Maritimes. These eastern provinces – Nova  Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island – were unexplored territory for us both an d we thought, what better way to see these places than by car. Eastern Canada is infamous for its rainy and windy weather, but that didn’t stop us. We ended up being very lucky and had good weather for the majority of our trip. Rather than stay in hotels or guesthouses, we decided to camp in the provincial and national parks along the way. Each park has a campground where we paid a small fee for access to the amenities and pitched our tent for the night. This provided us with the perfect opportunity to truly enjoy the outdoors, cooking on a barbecue and spending our nights under the stars.

The trip had been planned months ahead of time and by early July, it was finally upon us. We started our road trip in Toronto, hopping in Kristi’s car and driving 8 hours to get to Quebec City. After spending several days checking out the city’s festivals, restaurants, and night life, we continued our journey to our first stop in the Maritimes: Prince Edward Island (PEI). The island is well-known among Canadians for its picture-perfect lighthouses, green farming communities and amazing beaches. PEI is quite small in size, taking only an hour to drive from one end of the island to the other. Despite its size, there is no shortage of beautiful places to see. We camped in Red Point Provincial Park, renowned for its red-sand shores, with our campsite just steps from the beach. From there, we went on several day trips to explore the island. We walked along the sand dunes at Prince Edward Island National Park, climbed the lighthouse at Point Prim, and took in the beautiful sunset at Basin Head Provincial Park. It would have been easy to spend a few weeks in PEI but for our trip, we only had 4 days. After seeing everything on our to-do list, we packed up our camping gear an d it was on to our next destination.

To get to Nova Scotia, we caught a ferry across the Northumberland Strait. We passed many farms and pastures and headed northeast, to the Cabot Trail. The trail is actually a highway that runs through Cape Breton Highlands National Park in the northern tip of Nova Scotia. It is touted as one of the most scenic driving routes in Canada and did not disappoint. Following the hilly highway, we were constantly exclaiming “wow!” as the breathtaking scenery continued to surprise us. With lush forests on one side of the road and rocky shores on the other, the highway cut its way along the rugged coastline. Camping in the Cape Breton Highlands National Park was incredible. We had a quiet campsite close to the beach and made friends with our neighbours from Newfoundland, who shared our excitement about the park. It was during this leg of the journey that we had our best meal of the trip, at a seaside chowder house in the small town of Neils Harbour. For a very modest price, we had a seafood feast consisting of fresh lobster, mussels and crab cakes. Completing the Cabot Trail can be done in a few hours but we took our time and did it in a day instead, often pulling over to the side of the road to take in the view.

Following the long drive down the eastern coast of Nova Scotia, our next destination was Battery Provincial Park. When we arrived at the campsite, what stuck us was the fantastic view of St. Peter’s Bay. In awe, we couldn’t believe our eyes! With the ocean right in front of us, we gave ourselves the chance to take in the view and do some relaxing before the sun went down. Sitting around the campfire, we barbecued our dinner and watched as the stars appeared, one by one. I appreciated the freedom and time we had to enjoy such a place, where things could be so simple and peaceful. Getting up with the sun and going to bed after it disappeared under the horizon was a comfortable routine. One thing I noticed was how out of touch with the media and current events we were while on holiday. That night, we decided to check the news on our smartphones. News stories ranging from the terror in Nice to the viral popularity of Pokémon GO reminded us that the world was a dangerous and unpredictable place. Our camping road trip was a welcomed escape, albeit a brief one.

Since the world kept turning, so too did we have to continue driving. Changing directions, we headed back from whence we came, west across Nova Scotia and through the province of New Brunswick. Known for its moody atmosphere and extreme tides, we travelled around the Bay of Fundy. On our way to Fundy National Park, we stopped to check out Hopewell Rocks Park, where erosion from the tides has created enormous rock formations. Kristi and I walked on the ocean floor, starring up at the Flower Pot Rocks that towered over us. Even in just a few minutes, the tide shifted rapidly and changed the entire shoreline. We watched the tides and stayed in the park until it closed, then continued on to Fundy National Park to camp for the night. It was by far the busiest campground we had stayed in but we were given a beautiful camping spot in the forest. Our neighbours were from PEI and after striking up a conversation, we quickly became friends. By the bonfire, they told us much about their home province while we shared of our own stories about Ontario. The parks we stayed in proved to be excellent spots to enjoy nature but also to meet fellow travellers.

From the Bay of Fundy, we drove to Montreal and stayed for a few days at a hostel there. Being back in a city was so different from the camping we were used to but it was a nice change in pace. Montreal is lively and vibrant in the summertime, so we took full advantage by doing some sightseeing and shopping. The drive back to Toronto went by quickly and we arrived with smiles on our faces. All in all, we travelled about 5,000 kilometers in those 2 weeks. Lucky for us, we had no car problems during our entire road trip! We were in no rush and the relaxed pace made the trip even better. Along the way, we listened to countless songs on the car stereo, had many laughs over delicious meals, made new friends and saw the diverse landscape of our wonderful country. It had always been a dream for me to road trip through Eastern Canada and I’m so grateful that I was able to share the experience with my good friend. The summer of 2016 will truly be an unforgettable one.
