여행은 언제나 경험이다. 여행이란 경험은 우리에게 무수한 추억을 남기고, 무언가 배울 것을 주며, 우리 삶의 가치관을 변하게 한다. 한국은 정말 내 일생에 꼭 한 번은 경험해 봐야 할 나라였다. 나와 내 인도 친구들은 부산 경성대학교의 교환학생으로 멀리 인도에서 이곳 부산으로 왔다(편집자주: 필자는 올해 2월에 경성대 교환학생으로 와서 한 학기 일정으로 부산에 체류하고 있다). 처음 가진 내 느낌은 낯선 나라에 도착한 사람이라면 누구나 가질 수 있는 그런 것이었다. 낯선 환경, 낯선 장소, 낯선 사람들, 낯선 언어들이 나를 기다리고 있었지만, 한편으로는 진하고 신나는 경험을 해보고 싶은 흥분과 열망도 자리 잡고 있었다. 우리들은 이곳 한국에서 정말 멋진 경험을 맛보고 싶었다.
사람들이 다른 나라를 여행할 때 먼저 알아야 할 것은 새로운 환경에 적응부터 해야 한다는 점이다. 사람들은 새로운 기후, 음식, 그리고 언어 장벽에 스스로를 맞춰 나가야 한다. 우리라고 예외는 아니었다. 나와 인도 친구들은 이런 낯선 장애물들과 맞닥뜨려야 했다. 우리가 한국에 도착한 것은 2월 말이었다. 한국 날씨는 인도에서 겪은 것과는 비교도 되지 않을 정도로 추웠다. 우리는 추운 날씨에 단단히 대비하고 한국에 왔지만, 실제 한국의 낮은 온도에 적응하는 일은 녹록지 않았다. 음식이 또 다른 장애가 될지는 미처 생각지 못했다. 한국 음식은 인도 음식과 근본적으로 달랐다. 한국 음식은 우리 입맛보다 훨씬 싱거웠다. 그리고 한국 음식은 자극적이고 때론 냄새가 좋지 않았다. 당시 나의 입맛에 맞는 구세주 같은 음식은 오로지 김치뿐이었다. 내 인도 친구들은 나보다 더 음식 때문에 어려운 시절을 보냈다. 그러나 이 고난의 시기는 그리 길지 않았다. 우리들은 곧 한국 음식 맛에 완벽하게 적응했다.
또 다른 난관은 언어 문제였다. 우리 중 누구도 한국어를 할 줄 아는 사람이 없었고, 우리는 곧 한국에서 한국어 모르고 산다는 것은 거의 불가능하다는 점을 깨닫게 됐다. 우리가 영어로 길을 물으면, 한국 사람들은 그냥 우리를 피하기 일쑤였다. 일부 한국인들은 영어를 잘 하지 못함에도 불구하고 어떻게든 우리를 도와주려고 갖은 애를 쓰기도 했다. 한국 사람들은 일반적으로 따뜻하고 친절한 것은 사실이지만, 언어 장벽 때문에 그들은 외국인과 소통하기를 두려워하는 듯했다. 그러나 강의실의 한국 친구들과 교수님들은 정말 우리들에게 잘 대해주고 모든 것을 도와주려고 하고 있다. 국제교류를 담당하는 학교 직원들 역시 우리 인도 친구들은 물론 모든 외국 학생들에게 커다란 의지가 되고 있다.
프랑스 공상과학 소설가 쥘 베른(Julie Verne)은 “바다는 초자연적이고 경이로운 존재의 화신이다. 그것은 애정과 감정 그 이상의 것이다. 그것은 살아있는 무한한 가능성이다...”라고 말했다. 부산을 탐험한다는 것은 흥분과 즐거움의 연속이었다. 우리의 부산 탐험은 부산 역사 속으로 거슬러 올라가는 것으로부터 시작됐다. 세계의 모든 도시는 탐구할 만한 흥미의 대상이고 슬픔과 행복 모두가 점철된 역사를 가지고 있다. 우리는 부산박물관을 방문해서 부산의 고대 형성기 역사를 알게 됐다. 부산 역사는 우리가 살던 도시와 비슷한 역사를 갖고 있다는 사실도 우리는 알게 됐다. 부산의 5대 사찰이라고 불리는 해동용궁사의 방문은 우리에게 한국 사람들의 종교적 믿음과 문화를 이해하는 계기가 됐다. 특히 해동용궁사가 바닷가 절벽에 자리 잡고 있다는 점이 우리에게 강렬한 인상을 주었다. 해동용궁사 방문은 우리에게 아주 독특한 종교적 체험이었다.
부산은 항구도시다. 그래서 우리는 광안리, 해운대와 같은 비치를 구경할 수 있었다. 우리는 해운대에서 열린 홀리 축제(Holi Festival)에 참여하게 되었는데, 이게 부산에서 가장 기억에 남을 추억이 됐다. 홀리는 인도의 전통적인 색(色)의 축제인데, 외국땅에서 홀리 축제를 즐길 수 있었던 일은 정말 잊을 수 없는 경험이었다. 또 다른 환상적인 경험은 우리가 ‘2016 세계의 모임’(편집자주: 부산 금정구청이 주최한 행사로 부산시민공원에서 외국인들이 모여서 모두가 세계 시민이라는 의식을 가지고 인류라는 공동사회를 이루자는 취지의 행사임)에 참석한 일이었는데, 그 자리에는 글자 그대로 세계라는 한 지붕 아래에서 살고 있는 다양한 외국인들이 모였다. 이 행사에서 세계 각지에서 모인 사람들은 각자의 전통 예술, 공예, 음식, 음악, 춤 등의 문화를 선보였다. 감천문화마을을 방문한 것도 또 다른 이색 경험이었다. 이 마을은 한국의 전통적인 그림과 오래된 가옥의 구조를 보여주었다.
우리는 코코넛 껍질을 벗기고 또 벗겨야 가장 맛있는 코코넛 즙에 도달할 수 있다. 우리는 딱딱한 조개껍질을 깨야 비로소 부드러운 젖빛 조개 속살을 얻을 수 있다. 나의 부산 경험이 꼭 그런 것 같다. 부산 정착 초기의 걱정과 어려움을 넘어서니, 비로소 부산의 아름다움이 내게 다가왔다.
한국 체류의 마지막이 서서히 다가오고 있다. 나는 나의 분신들 곁을 조만간 떠나야 하는 듯한 심정을 느끼고 있다. 내가 만난 한국 친구들, 내가 한국에서 보낸 시절들이 모두 나의 분신이며 내 평생 소중히 간직할 기억들이기 때문이다. 한국 사람들, 장소들, 문화들, 음식들이 내 일생 동안 내 가슴을 수놓을 아름다운 추억이 될 것이다. 한국 경험을 글로 모두 적는다는 것은 결코 쉬운 일이 아니다. 한국 경험은 내가 느끼는 그 어떤 것이면서 동시에 생각할 때마다 내 얼굴에 미소를 짓게 한다. 감히 그 느낌을 어찌 말로 다 표현할 수 있단 말인가!

EXPERIENCING BUSAN
Travelling is always an experience. An experience that gives us countless memories, an experience to learn from, an experience that changes our perspective to life. Korea was indeed going to be a once in a lifetime experience. I and my friends came from India as exchange students to Kyungsung University, Busan, South Korea. Initially, the feeling was same as somebody has when they travel to a new country. A completely new environment, new place, new people, new language but also excitement and enthusiasm for an exciting and enriching experience. We all were looking forward for a wonderful experience here in Korea. When we travel to a different country, one thing we all learn is adjustment. To adjust with the climate, the food, the language barrier etc. It was no different for us. We also had our share of struggles. We arrived to Korea at the end of February, and the weather was very cold, unlike what we have experienced back in India. Although we came prepared for it, adjusting to the weather was not an easy task. Food was yet another barrier. The food in Korea is different from Indian food. We found the food to lack salt, as per our taste, at times it was bitter and sometimes we didn’t like the smell. Khimchi was my only saviour in those days. My friends were struggling even harder. But, this was only during the initial period. Eventually we all got adjusted to the flavours of Korean food. Another problem that we faced was language. None of us were well versed with Korean language and soon we realised that it was hard to survive in Korea without knowing Korean. There were times when we asked people for directions in English and people just passed by us instead. Some were indeed kind enough to help us even though we had the language barrier. People here are generally warm and kind but I think the language barrier is perhaps one reason that they avoid interactions with foreigners. My classmates and teachers here have been very kind and supportive. The staff in the International Affairs department have always been a great help to us and the other international students.
As Jules Verne said, “The Sea is only the embodiment of a supernatural and wonderful existence.It is nothing but love and emotion;it is the ‘Living Infinite...” exploring Busan was filled with fun and excitement. On our expedition in Busan, we also stepped back into history. Most of the city has a history which is really interesting to explore and it is filled with happiness and sorrow. As we visited the Busan Museum, we learned the history of the formation of Busan. This helped us understand how we shared a similar history with theirs. Visiting the Hae Dong Yong Gung Temple one among the famous five ancient Buddhist temples of Busan was an outbreak to the culture and religious beliefs of the people of Korea. This temple located on a hill beside the sea shore was exquisite. It was a religious experience for me and my fellow friends.
Busan is the harbour city and we get to see lot of beaches like Gwangali, Haeundae etc. One of the most memorable experience was celebrating the Holi festival in Haeundae. Holi is an Indian festival of colours and celebrating it in a foreign land amongst foreigners was an unforgettable experience on its own. Another wonderful experience was the Global Gathering 2016, where people from around the world came together, literally under one roof. It was a gathering where people from different countries exhibited their culture through arts and artefacts, food, music, dance etc. Our visit to the Gamcheon Cultural village was another wonderful experience. A cultural village with roots to traditions has many Korean traditional artworks and structures.
You need to peel a coconut layer by layer to reach to its best part. You need to go through the hard shell first to reach the soft milky layer of it. I think my experience here has been quite similar. Only after I overcame my initial worries and difficulties was I able to experience the beauty of this place.
As we are nearing to our final days in Korea, it feels like I am leaving a part of me here. The friends I made and the time I spent here are the memories I will cherish for a lifetime. The wonderful people, places, culture and the food are all going to be a beautiful memory painted into my heart. One part about experiences is the difficulty of jotting down the feelings in words. It is something which we feel and just the thought of it brings a smile on our face, it’s pretty much hard to explain those feelings.
